News October 2015
The council has applied to Historic England for a view as to whether a primary school would be acceptable in principle on the Bourneside site within the Grovelands Estate. Stakeholders such as ourselves and the Friends of Grovelands were not informed of this. It just happened that our ward councillors had checked on the current situation prior to a Southgate Ward Forum. I have asked the council for copies of the supporting documents that went with the application (such as the Historic Parks Survey and park management plan) but at the moment the council seems unprepared to do this, despite the fundamental nature of the decision being sought.
A new Premier Inns hotel has been proposed for part of The Grange site (the one given to the council for the good of the public but which ended up with an office block rather than an arts centre). This would accommodate 90 guests, with 43 parking spaces. The office block would lose some of its parking as well. The block would be six storeys tall but would be behind the existing office block (as seen from outside Richer Sounds). It is clear from the planning statement within the set of forty-two (!) documents contained within the planning application, that there have been extensive discussions between the council and the developer and that the council is keen to see a hotel there. Residents in Grange Gardens, Bourneside Crescent and parts of Leigh Hunt Drive are likely to be those most affected.
